Superior Branding Strategy (aka The HMC Company) was founded in 1989 by Rowland Hanson. Before consulting, he was Microsoft’s Vice President of Corporate Communications, where he created and executed their highly acclaimed branding strategy, including the global launch of a product he named “Windows.” Over the last 15 years, he has remained involved with Microsoft as an appointed board member and trustee of Microsoft’s Alumni Network & Foundation. Before Microsoft, he held marketing executive positions at General Mills and Nestle. However, his role as Neutrogena’s Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, which resulted in Neutrogena becoming the leading skincare brand, is what attracted Bill Gates. Bill aggressively recruited Rowland with the Bill mandate: do for the Microsoft brand what you did for the Neutrogena brand. Bill was the first software industry executive to realize that building the brand would result in building the business. 

 

Post Microsoft, Rowland has split his time between consulting and founding new companies that were subsequently sold to other companies.
 
Rowland has a BBA from Loyola Marymount University, where he graduated with Alpha Sigma Nu (Jesuit Honors Society), and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business, where he graduated on the Director’s List of Distinction.
